What you need to know for a Maternity Photoshoot

Pregnancy is one of the most beautiful things a woman goes through and experiences. All the emotions, the physical changes, this time is so special as you are creating life inside of you and developing the closest bond you could ever have. So why not capture it? You may not know what all goes into a maternity photo shoot. I can help you with that!

Life flies by and when you have a baby, even more. Before you know it, your baby will be an adult and you’ll have the memories of their life held close to your heart. That’s what a maternity photoshoot does, it captures the beautiful moments before that little bundle of joy is in your arms.

There are 3 things to keep in mind when planning your maternity photoshoot:

  1. Timing

  2. Outfits

  3. Props

1.  Timing

This is the first thing you want to think about when planning your maternity shoot when you want to do it. The best time to take maternity photos is when you are 27-32 weeks.  Some women capture their pregnancy early on when their bump is still small, and others capture their growing baby when it’s close to the finish line. This is completely up to you. But you absolutely want to keep in mind that photographers often get booked 2-3 months in advance, this is definitely something you want to keep in mind when deciding to look for a photographer. The earlier you book, the better. Do not wait!

Another thing to keep in mind when choosing the timing is, are you doing this for a baby announcement or an event like a baby shower, or maybe just to have in your photo album to look back on. Thinking about this will help you decide when is the right moment to book your photoshoot.

2. Outfits

Again, once you decide when you want to take photos, your choice of a wardrobe will be much easier. Of course, however, every maternity shoot should be full of feminine and beautiful energy. That is why I take my time to find beautiful gowns and outfits that truly accentuate my expecting mothers and the love they are creating.

It’s great to look at Pinterest or Instagram so you can get inspo and find the look you are going for during your maternity shoot. I also provide a beautiful wardrobe for my expecting mommies to choose from, here are a few.

3. Props

Many women like to bring either baby shoes or outfits they will have for their newborn, some may even bring a sonogram. However, while these things may hold special value to you, they can distract from what the focus of the shoot is, you and your belly.

Maybe you have a family heirloom that has been around for generations that you would like to have as symbolism or pay tribute to your family. Heirlooms such as jewelry or wardrobe-related pieces can be the perfect touch for your shoot and add that much more meaning behind them.

These are things to think about.

Save the other props for “babies first photo shoot”.
